When the Farm Road Was Locked for a Private Event, One Inspector Had to Choose What His Job Was Worth

Chapter 1: The Morning Margaret Found Her Farm Road Chained

The chain across the farm road was new.

Daniel Wright knew that before he even shut off his county truck. The galvanized links were too bright, the brass-colored padlock too clean, and the heavy metal gate had never before been secured during daylight.

An older woman stood beside it with one hand wrapped around a small key.

Margaret Nelson.

She lifted the key when Daniel approached, as if the problem might explain itself.

“It used to open that gate.”

Beyond the fence, workers unloaded folding chairs from an enclosed trailer. A temporary tent stood beside the cooperative’s equipment shed. Two men rolled sections of portable flooring toward the gravel loading area.

Daniel looked from the activity to Margaret.
