They Fined Him for One Farm Camera Until He Asked What Their Nine Cameras Were Recording

Chapter 1: The Orange Tag on Daniel’s Cattle Gate

Daniel saw the orange tag before he saw Sharon Walker.

It snapped in the morning breeze beneath the small black camera mounted to his cedar gatepost, bright enough to look unnatural against gray gravel, green pasture, and weathered wire.

Sharon was standing beside the post with a plastic tie still in one hand.

“Don’t cut that down,” she said.

Daniel stopped halfway out of his pickup.

Thirty yards behind him, cattle pressed along the feed bunk. A delivery truck was due before nine, and he still had a hydraulic line to replace on the loader. Sharon had chosen a Monday morning because she knew he would be busy.

He shut the truck door.

“What is it?”
