The HOA Gave Him Thirty Days to Tear Down His Stone House—Then the Hill Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Notice Nailed Beside the Old Stone Door

The first hammer strike hit the brass nail beside Gregory Carter’s front door at 8:12 on Monday morning.

He heard it from the kitchen.

By the time he stepped onto the porch, the HOA property manager had driven the second nail through the plastic sleeve holding the notice. Heather Nelson stood two steps below him with a folder tucked against her ribs. Behind her, the structural inspector was unfolding a clipboard. Two neighbors had stopped on the lane.

Gregory read the largest line first.

THIRTY-DAY HAZARD COMPLIANCE NOTICE.

“You nailed it to the stone trim?”

“The mortar joint,” the manager said.

Gregory looked at the nail. “That isn’t a mortar joint.”
