The HOA Tried to Stop His Backyard Airplane Restoration—Then the Jet Engine Forced Everyone to Read the Rules Again

Chapter 1: The Airplane Behind the Cedar Fence

Ronald Davis appeared at the backyard gate while James Mitchell still had a sanding block in his hand.

James noticed him because the motor on the shop vacuum had just cut out, leaving the yard suddenly quiet enough for the latch to rattle.

Ronald stood on the other side of the cedar fence in a tucked blue polo and khaki pants, holding a white envelope against a clipboard. Behind James, the stripped aluminum fuselage of an old light airplane rested on padded stands beneath the open-sided workshop roof.

Ronald looked past James before he looked at him.

“So it’s true.”

James brushed gray dust from his forearm. “Depends what you heard.”

“That there’s an airplane back here.”

James glanced over his shoulder as if the fuselage might have disappeared.
