They Used Her Farm Lane for Construction Until She Found the Boundary Rule Their Own Permit Required

Chapter 1: The Grader Was Already Past Her Gate

The grader blade was already six feet past Anna Walker’s gate when she stepped into the lane and raised one hand.

The operator saw her late.

The machine lurched to a stop with its front blade angled toward the shallow strip of grass that had always carried rainwater away from the gravel road and down toward Anna’s lower pasture. Fresh gray stone spilled from the blade’s edge. Behind it, two deep tire tracks cut through ground that had been green the evening before.

Anna stood where the lane narrowed between the cattle gate and an old cedar post.

“Back it out.”

The operator looked toward the contractor pickup instead of answering.

A man in a white hard hat climbed from the passenger side. Anna recognized him from the weeks of construction traffic beyond her east fence. Gary Nelson had introduced himself once, briefly, as the superintendent for the new development going in beyond the ridge.

He approached with the brisk patience of someone already behind schedule.
