What She Carried

Part I — The Purple Case

Staff Sergeant Ryan Miller saw the older woman before he saw the case, and that was his first mistake.

She was walking up the dirt path like she had all morning to get there, silver hair pinned low, lavender windbreaker catching the Georgia light, boots clean enough to make every soldier nearby notice. Under one arm she carried a long purple case, soft-sided and bright as a spring flower, the kind of thing Ryan might have expected to see at a music lesson, not outside a marksmanship range.

Behind him, three trainees stopped pretending not to stare.

Ryan stepped into her path.

“Ma’am,” he said, with a smile that made the younger soldiers grin before he even finished. “You lost?”

The woman looked at him as if she had heard worse weather.

“No.”

Her voice was calm. Not offended. Not nervous.
