They Ordered Him to Move the Farm Fence—But the Record They Needed Was Missing

Chapter 1: The Line They Painted Beside His Fence

The contractor had already laid a pry bar beside Raymond Hill’s fence before Raymond understood they had come to move it.

He stopped halfway across the gravel apron with one work glove still tucked beneath his belt. A flatbed truck sat at the entrance to his farm, angled partly into the shared lane. Behind it, a man in a reflective vest unloaded a post puller and a bundle of orange marking flags.

Brenda Roberts stood near Raymond’s oldest corner post with a measuring wheel in one hand.

A streak of orange paint cut through the grass beside her boots.

Raymond looked from the paint to the weathered cedar post.

“What’s that?”

Brenda straightened. “The maintenance line.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”
