I Trusted My Neighbor With One Spare Key—Then the HOA Started Treating My Home Like His Business

Chapter 1: The Suitcases Were Already on My Porch

The first thing I saw when I turned onto my street was a black SUV in my driveway.

The second was a woman pulling a hard-shell suitcase through my front gate.

I slowed so sharply that the duffel bag on the passenger seat slid into the footwell.

For fourteen months, I had pictured coming home in small, ordinary ways. Coffee from my own kitchen. My boots by the back door. The maple tree over the garage. Maybe Gregory Hall standing at the curb with that half-wave he always gave when he was pretending he had not been watching the street.

I had never pictured luggage.

The woman reached my porch while a man behind her unloaded another suitcase from the SUV. A third person stood near the front steps looking down at a phone.

I stopped at the curb instead of pulling into the driveway.

For a few seconds I wondered whether I had the wrong house.
