My Neighbor Smashed My Mailbox Over Six Inches, Then His Own Rules Turned Against Him

Chapter 1: The Six Inches George Claimed Gave Him Authority

Daniel Rivera heard the second blow before he saw the first broken letter in the street.

The sound came through the kitchen window like a splitting board—wood, metal, then the hollow clatter of something rolling along the curb. He set down his coffee and crossed the living room without running. By the time he opened the front door, George Campbell had raised the sledge again.

“Don’t,” Daniel said.

George brought it down anyway.

The black mailbox folded sideways. Its red flag snapped free and landed near the storm drain. Envelopes slid across the asphalt, white against the dark pavement. One stopped beneath George’s polished pickup. Another caught in the grass beside Daniel’s driveway.

George rested both hands on the sledge handle. In his left hand, somehow still upright, was the stainless travel mug he carried every morning.

“You were warned,” he said.

Daniel stepped off the porch. Across the street, a garage door had stalled halfway open. A woman stood behind it in slippers. Farther down the block, a man walking a terrier had stopped without pretending otherwise.
