She Called My Emergency Generator a Violation While My Wife’s ICU Went Dark

Chapter 1: The Cable Was Already Coming Loose

Daniel Carter opened his front door to the sound of a wrench turning against metal.

Not a knock. Not a doorbell. Not Cynthia Rivera’s sharp voice calling from the walkway like she usually did when the HOA wanted him to trim back the brittle desert sage by the mailbox.

A wrench.

It came from the side of the driveway, where the yellow CAT generator sat on its temporary steel skid under the shade cloth Daniel had rigged two weeks earlier. A man in a gray work shirt was crouched beside the transfer box, one knee in the gravel, his gloved hand braced against the thick black cable that ran from the generator toward the house.

The cable was already moving.

Daniel stepped onto the porch barefoot, the cool stucco under his heels forgotten. “Stop.”

The worker looked up, startled, then glanced past Daniel toward the street.

That was when Daniel saw the rest of them.
