My Neighbor Kept Taking My Trash Bins Until I Made His Claim Impossible to Defend

Chapter 1: The Bins Were Gone Before Sunrise

Ryan Davis saw the green lid moving before he saw the man pulling it.

At 11:43 on Tuesday night, one of his trash bins rolled through the yellow pool of the streetlight, wheels rattling over the seam between his driveway and the sidewalk. Robert Hall had both hands on the handle.

Ryan stood behind his kitchen window with a glass of water halfway to his mouth.

Robert crossed the narrow strip of grass between their houses and pulled the bin toward his own side yard as calmly as if he were putting away a lawn mower.

Ryan set the glass down.

By the time he reached the front door, Robert had disappeared behind the wooden fence.

For three seconds Ryan considered going after him.

Instead, he stood barefoot on the porch and looked at the empty patch of curb where two bins had been waiting for Wednesday collection.
