Chapter 1: The Car Waiting Beside My Hydrant

The sedan was already there when I opened my garage Monday morning, idling across the lower edge of my driveway with its hazard lights blinking.

I stood behind my car with my work bag in one hand and stared at it.

The driver looked up from his phone, noticed me, then looked back down.

I walked to his window.

“Morning. I need to get out.”

He lowered the glass halfway. “Just picking somebody up.”

“Could you move forward a little?”

He glanced toward the house two doors down.
