They Tore Down David’s Fence for Two Inches, Then His Binder Exposed What the HOA Was Hiding

Chapter 1: The Two Inches Katherine Suddenly Needed

Katherine Wright struck the cedar fence post with a small wooden gavel and said, “Friday.”

The sound was not loud, but it carried across David Miller’s driveway and brought Paul Anderson’s pool crew to a stop on the other side of the property line.

David looked from the gavel to the laminated notice in Katherine’s other hand.

“Friday for what?”

“For removal.” She tapped the paper. “After that, the association will assess three hundred dollars per day.”

The fence had stood for eleven years.

David had replaced two warped boards, stained it three times, and tightened the gate after every winter. He and his wife had chosen the cedar together because she disliked the blank look of vinyl. Since her death, he had kept the fence exactly as they had built it.

Now a bright orange survey string ran along its base, close enough to brush the grass.
