The HOA Sent Fake Officers to His Cabin, but the Road Beneath Them Held the Truth

Chapter 1: The Men at the Cabin Door

The first blow against the door shook dust from the top hinge.

Richard Carter stood in the narrow space between the kitchen and the front room, one hand still wrapped around a coffee mug, listening as a second blow landed harder than the first.

“Mr. Carter,” a man called from the porch. “Open the door.”

Through the front window, Richard could see two dark uniforms and the pale shape of Amanda White’s suit behind them. Her white SUV sat crooked on the gravel road, its tires pressed deep into the soft edge Richard had spent Saturday repairing.

Amanda stepped into view and pointed toward the cabin.

“You need to leave this property,” she said. “If you refuse, my officers will remove you.”

My officers.

Richard set the mug down.
