The HOA President Locked the Gate While an Ambulance Waited, but the Easement Told a Different Story

Chapter 1: The Ambulance Stopped at the Locked Gate

Catherine Brown’s SUV sat sideways across the entrance, its rear bumper inches from the steel gatepost, while red ambulance lights pulsed over her windshield.

“Move the vehicle,” Virginia Lewis said.

She had run nearly the full length of the private lane without a coat. Gravel had worked into one slipper, and each breath scraped the back of her throat. Behind her, four houses stretched along the narrow road. Her own sat at the far end, where a delivery driver lay on his back beside a scatter of cardboard boxes.

Catherine stood between the ambulance and the gate with her HOA lanyard hanging over a cream sweater.

“They can’t enter without authorization.”

Virginia stared at her. “There is a man dying in my driveway.”

The ambulance driver lowered the window. “Ma’am, move the SUV.”

Catherine did not turn around. “This is a private access road.”
