The HOA Called His Pool Community Property, Then Ordered The Safety Repair Removed

Chapter 1: The Notice Arrived While the Saw Was Running

The saw was already halfway through the stainless-steel rail when Richard Hall stepped onto the pool deck.

For three seconds, he did not speak. The sound filled everything—the high, whining bite of metal, the scrape of a worker’s boot against concrete, the rattle of the temporary safety gate as another man tried to loosen its hinge from the post Richard had set himself. Morning sun glared off the pool water, bright enough to hide the hairline crack near the drain cover unless a person knew where to look.

Richard knew where to look.

He crossed the deck without raising his voice. “Shut that off.”

The worker with the saw looked up, face shield fogged at the edges. The blade kept spinning.

Richard stepped closer. Not fast. Not reckless. Just close enough that the worker finally lifted the tool away from the rail and let the motor whine down.

Behind the crew, Sandra Lewis stood in low heels at the gate, navy blazer buttoned, folder tucked under one arm like she had come to inspect landscaping instead of dismantle the only safe way his wife could get in and out of the water. Her pearl necklace sat perfectly against a pale blue blouse. Her expression did not change when Richard looked at her.

“Mr. Hall,” she said. “Please stay clear of the work area.”
