The HOA Sent A Crew To Tear Out The Ramp Beside His Waterfall Gate

Chapter 1: The Crew Was Already Pulling Out The Ramp

The machine was already running when Patrick Miller reached the gate.

Its engine coughed and growled above the sound of the waterfall, the bucket arm lifted over the gravel approach like a steel elbow, and one of the workers had a pry bar wedged under the first plank of the ramp Patrick had built three weeks earlier. The board came loose with a wet crack. Mud sucked at the post beneath it. A second worker carried the plank toward a flatbed truck as if it were scrap.

Patrick stopped with one hand on the metal gate.

For a moment he did not move. The sheep in the lower pasture had bunched near the fence, watching the strangers with their dull, nervous eyes. Beyond them, the red barn sat in the morning light, its roof still dark from the storm. Beside the gate, the waterfall dropped white and hard over the rock shelf, throwing mist across the road where Patrick had packed crushed gravel into the washed-out culvert.

A red SUV idled on the outside shoulder.

The letters on the door read HOA COMPLIANCE.

Patrick unlatched the gate and stepped through.

“Shut that machine down,” he said.
