The HOA Locked Samuel Out of His Family’s Boat Ramp—Then His Grandfather’s Old Records Changed the Entire Fight

Chapter 1: The Keycard Turned Red at the Ramp

The reader flashed red before Samuel Hall had even taken his hand away.

He stared at it, then at the steel gate, as if one of them had made a mistake that might correct itself out of embarrassment.

Behind his truck, the little aluminum fishing boat sat on its trailer with two rods strapped along the gunwale and a blue cooler wedged beneath the bench seat. Another vehicle had already turned into the access lane behind him. Samuel could see the driver waiting through his side mirror.

He touched the card to the reader again.

Red.

A short electronic chirp sounded almost cheerful.

“What the hell?”

He tried once more, slower this time.
