The HOA Ordered Him to Remove One Camera, Then He Asked What Theirs Had Recorded

Chapter 1: The Orange Notice on the Old Pickup

The orange notice struck Patrick Harris’s windshield hard enough to make the rearview mirror tremble.

Cynthia Mitchell kept her palm against the glass for a second, smoothing the adhesive as if she were installing something meant to last.

“Remove it by Friday,” she said. “Otherwise the association authorizes the tow, and the fines begin immediately.”

Patrick stood at the open tailgate of his pickup with a coil of network cable over one shoulder. His work shirt still carried white dust from a school renovation across town. He looked from Cynthia to the notice, then toward the small black camera mounted above his front door.

“You’re towing my truck because of that?”

“The truck is part of the enforcement process.”

“It’s registered. It runs. It’s parked in my driveway.”

Cynthia folded her arms over her navy HOA polo. “The camera is an unapproved exterior alteration. You received two courtesy emails.”
