The certified envelope had been taped to the garden stake beside his father’s tomatoes.

Michael Moore saw it before he saw anything else.

The white envelope hung inside a clear plastic sleeve, its corner fluttering against the cedar stake whenever the morning breeze came through the side yard. Behind it, tomato vines leaned against wire cages Edward Moore had bent by hand more than thirty years earlier.

Michael stopped halfway down the steps.

Nobody from the postal service had put it there. The certified letter had already been delivered to his mailbox on Saturday. He had signed for it himself.

Someone had taken the trouble to bring a copy into his side yard.

He pulled the paper from the sleeve.
