The HOA Turned Away Emergency Food After the Storm—Then One Resident Checked Who the Gate Was Really Protecting

Chapter 1: The Relief Truck Stopped at Their Own Gate

The relief truck braked hard enough that the cases of bottled water shifted against the side rails.

Sarah Taylor heard the plastic thump from twenty yards away.

The black entrance gate had not moved.

On the other side of it, the driver leaned toward his open window and pointed at the keypad as if perhaps the guard had misunderstood. The community security guard stood with one hand raised, palm out.

“No entry.”

Sarah crossed the debris-streaked sidewalk before the driver could answer. A broken mesquite branch lay across one curb, and half the streetlights along the entrance road were still dark from the windstorm three nights earlier.

“What happened?” she asked.

The driver held up a clipboard. “We have this neighborhood on the morning route. Water, shelf-stable meals, infant supplies. We were told somebody here had a distribution list.”
