The HOA Ordered Samuel to Shut Down His Generator—Then the Heat Exposed a Rule Nobody Had Actually Passed

Chapter 1: The Cord Crossing Raymond’s Driveway

Rebecca Anderson laid the violation notice on top of Samuel Martinez’s generator while it was still running.

The paper shivered against the black plastic housing with every pulse of the engine.

Samuel stared at it, then at her.

“You probably don’t want that there.”

Rebecca glanced down. “Why?”

“Exhaust side.”

She moved the notice two feet to the left.

Behind her, the HOA management representative held a clipboard against his chest. His pale button-down shirt had darkened between the shoulder blades. The temperature on Samuel’s garage thermometer had passed 116 degrees before noon, and the concrete beneath them seemed to throw the heat back upward.
