Chapter 1: The Woman Who Ordered the Birds Away

“You have twenty-four hours to take that down.”

Christine Walker stood beneath the cedar bird feeder with one hand raised toward it as though identifying a structural defect. Her yellow inspection jacket was too bright for Mark Carter’s shaded backyard. Beside her, the HOA property manager held a tablet against his chest and avoided looking directly at Mark.

Above them, three chickadees crowded the feeder’s narrow tray. One flicked a sunflower hull onto Christine’s shoulder.

She brushed it away.

“That,” she said, “is exactly the problem.”

Mark set the garden hose beside the herb bed. “The bird?”

“The feeder. It’s attracting wildlife.”

“It’s a bird feeder.”
