The Neighbor Moved Daniel’s Boundary Stake, but the Garden Cameras Remembered Everything

Chapter 1: The Hammer Stopped Above the Garden

The sledgehammer stopped less than six inches above Daniel Garcia’s hand.

The steel head hung over the narrow garden bed, heavy enough to split the irrigation pipe beneath the soil and crush the roots of the pepper plants beside it. Anthony Walker still had both hands on the handle. His shoulders were turned into the swing. His face had already formed the expression of a man expecting impact.

Daniel’s right hand locked around the hickory shaft.

For one second neither man moved.

The wood gave a small, strained creak between their grips.

“That stake is on my property,” Daniel said.

Anthony’s mouth tightened. Sweat shone along his hairline despite the mild morning. Behind him, a rusted wheelbarrow leaned against the edge of the patio, its front tire sitting just over the pale seam that separated the two properties. Dark liquid dripped from the tray and gathered between the paving stones.

The wooden stake stood inside Daniel’s vegetable bed at an angle. Anthony had driven it through the mulch between two straight rows of peppers, nearly three feet from the surveyed boundary.
