The HOA Contractor Crossed His Mailbox Line and Found a Lawsuit Waiting

Chapter 1: The Sticker Placed Across the Painted Bird

“Kill the grill.”

Patrick Moore said it before the gate of his truck had stopped rattling shut.

He strode past James Clark’s mailbox with an iPad held upright in one hand, its camera pointed toward the driveway. Three workers followed him carrying tool bags, a ladder, and a plastic case long enough to hold a hedge trimmer. The fourth man remained beside the truck, peeling fluorescent orange stickers from a thick pad.

James stood near the corner of his house with barbecue tongs in his hand.

Behind him, smoke rose in a narrow blue ribbon from the covered grill. It drifted above the fence, thinned in the late-afternoon air, and disappeared before reaching the nearest roofline.

Patrick swung the iPad toward it.

“Documenting active noncompliance,” he said.

James lowered the tongs. “You’re standing on my property.”
