The Chair on Mark Carter’s Roof Hid More Than the Neighborhood Wanted to See

Chapter 1: The Chair Above the Roofline

Samantha Green stood in the middle of Mark Carter’s front lawn with one arm raised toward his roof and three phones pointed in the same direction.

“Why is there a chair up there?”

Her voice carried farther than it needed to. A sprinkler clicked across the next yard. Somewhere behind the hedge, a garage door stopped halfway down.

Mark kept one hand on the extension ladder resting against his gutter. He had been checking the lower bracket when Samantha arrived. Now she stood beneath him in a pink polo, sunglasses pushed into her hair, her phone held upright as though the answer might appear more clearly on its screen.

The chair sat ten feet above her line of sight, weathered white against the charcoal shingles. Its back faced the street. Two flat steel straps ran from its legs to a wooden frame built over the old roof vent.

“The whole neighborhood is talking about it,” Samantha said.

Scott Hernandez stood near the sidewalk, arms folded. Two other residents lingered behind him, pretending not to listen while recording openly.

Mark climbed down one rung at a time.
