When the Basketball Broke His Window Again, the HOA Told Him to Change His House Instead

Chapter 1: The Ball Came Through the Glass Again

The basketball came through Matthew Harris’s front window hard enough to carry a sheet of glass six feet into the room.

Matthew had been standing near the dining table with a mug in one hand when the first crack snapped through the house. A fraction of a second later came the deeper crash, then the hollow thump of the orange ball striking the hardwood and rolling beneath a chair.

He did not move immediately.

Sunlight poured through the jagged opening where the lower pane had been. Tiny pieces of glass glittered across the floor. Outside, beyond the damaged window, Alexander Walker stood at the edge of his driveway with both hands raised halfway toward his face.

Matthew set his mug down.

“Jessica?”

“I’m fine,” Jessica called from the kitchen.

Only then did he look toward Alexander again.
