The HOA Fined My Injured Daughter Two Hundred Dollars, So I Followed Every Number They Thought No One Would Read

Chapter 1: The Ticket Beside the Bent Pink Handlebars

The crack came before I saw Laura fall.

It was sharp enough to turn my head from the open garage—a dry metallic snap, then the scrape of something hard across concrete. By the time I reached the driveway, my daughter’s pink bicycle was sliding on its side and Laura was folded beside it, one sneaker trapped under the rear wheel.

For half a second, she made no sound.

Then she screamed.

I ran.

Chalk covered the sidewalk around her in bright islands of blue, yellow, and purple. She and two neighborhood kids had spent most of the morning drawing a crooked rainbow from our driveway to the corner. Now one pink handlebar pointed toward the grass at an angle I knew it had not held ten minutes earlier.

Laura clutched her left arm against her stomach.

“Daddy.”
