The HOA Fenced Off His Daughter’s Childhood Yard, Then Asked Him to Be Flexible

Chapter 1: The Fence That Appeared Before Sunset

A child Benjamin Miller had never seen was sitting on his bench.

The boy’s sneakers swung above the grass while his mother stood near a new chain-link gate, speaking to another parent as though the narrow yard beside Benjamin’s house had always belonged to everyone. Above them, bolted to the fence, hung a white sign with blue lettering:

COMMUNITY PLAY AREA
WILLOW CREEK HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION

Benjamin stopped halfway up his driveway with one hand still around the steering wheel.

That morning, the strip had been open grass running between his house and the hedge. Fourteen feet wide. His mower lines had still been visible from Sunday. The bench had faced east, where Sarah used to sit with her knees pulled up while he drank coffee before work.

Now silver fencing enclosed the entire strip.

A plastic tunnel lay near the back hedge. Two spring animals had been anchored into the soil. Fresh wood chips covered the ground where Sarah once picked dandelions and arranged them in the cup holder of the bench.

The boy noticed Benjamin staring.
