The HOA Said Her Dying Grandfather Forgot Signing Away His Savings—Then Amanda Checked the Date

Chapter 1: The Check That Failed Beside His Hospice Bed

The pharmacy clerk lowered her voice before she said the word declined, as if softness could make the medicine cheaper.

Amanda stood at the kitchen counter with the phone pressed to her ear and looked through the doorway toward the hospital bed in the living room. Frank lay on his back beneath a thin gray blanket, his face turned toward the window. The oxygen concentrator gave its steady mechanical sigh. Beside it, the hospice nurse was checking the line beneath his nose.

“There should be more than enough in that account,” Amanda said.

“I ran it twice.”

The clerk named the amount again. It covered the new pain prescription, anti-nausea medication, and the liquid dose the nurse wanted available before night. Amanda had reviewed the invoice on Friday. She had scheduled the payment herself.

“Can you hold it until this afternoon?”

There was a pause. Paper rustled on the other end.

“I can keep the order open until five.”
