The HOA Called His Side Yard “Unused”—Then Their Garage Plan Revealed Who Actually Needed It

Chapter 1: The Men Measuring Behind His Garage

The tape measure was stretched across Scott Harris’s side yard before anyone thought to knock on his door.

He saw it through the garage window Saturday morning: a bright yellow line running from the brick wall of Ashley Roberts’s house toward the narrow strip behind his own garage. One man held the end near the fence. Another stood beside a tripod, looking down at a handheld instrument.

Scott set his coffee on the workbench and walked outside.

“Can I help you?”

The man with the tape straightened. “Morning. We’re taking measurements for the Roberts property.”

“You’re standing on mine.”

Both men looked toward Ashley’s house.

Scott followed their glance. That irritated him more than an argument would have.
