She Locked the Ambulance Gate, but the Deed in My Desk Changed What Happened Next

Chapter 1: The Gate Closed After He Said Cardiac Arrest

The ambulance stopped so hard its front end dipped toward the pavement.

Twenty feet beyond the gate, a man lay on his back beside three crushed cardboard boxes, one hand still curled against his chest.

Sharon Campbell heard the brakes before she understood what had happened. Then the siren cut down to a throbbing pulse, red light sweeping across the brick entrance columns, the black bars of the gate, and Donna Miller’s dark SUV sitting sideways across the narrow lane.

“Move your car!”

Sharon did not recognize her own voice.

Donna stood beside the driver’s door with one hand raised toward the ambulance as if she were stopping a contractor who had arrived on the wrong day.

“They have to wait.”

“Wait for what?”
