She Called 911 At The Lake Dock With The Will That Left His Name Out

Chapter 1: The Papers Arrived Before The Boat Lights

“Your name isn’t in it, Michael.”

Nancy Moore’s voice crossed the water before the wind did. It hit him from the end of the dock, sharp enough to make him look up from the loose board he had been prying free with his boot.

For a second, he thought he had misheard her.

The lake was too quiet for that. The mountains held every sound in place. The old boathouse creaked behind him, the same way it had when he was twelve and Katherine Hall would call from the cabin porch for him to stop jumping from the railing. A crow moved through the pines. Somewhere under the dock, water tapped against the posts.

Nancy stood where the gravel path met the planks, wearing a white blouse too thin for the mountain air and holding a thick packet in one hand. A bright pink skirt snapped around her knees. She looked like she had dressed for an office and then driven herself into a memory she did not want to touch.

Michael kept his hand on the pry bar.

“What are you talking about?”

“The will.” Nancy lifted the packet. “Mom’s will. The updated one.”
