They Painted His Cedar Fence Gray, Then Learned Why He Kept Every Permit

Chapter 1: The Gray Paint Was Still Wet

Gray paint slid from the edge of a rose leaf and gathered at its tip.

Richard Walker watched the drop swell, tremble, then fall onto one of the pale river stones beneath the bush. It landed with a soft click he should not have been able to hear over the compressor whining behind his fence.

For several seconds, he did not move.

The cedar boards running the length of his backyard had been honey brown that morning. Now they were flat gray from the gate to the far corner, the color still wet enough to shine beneath the late-afternoon sun.

A worker in white coveralls lifted a spray gun and aimed at the final unpainted section.

“Stop.”

The worker hesitated but did not lower the gun. The compressor continued its mechanical pulse.

Richard stepped through the open gate. Blue tape crossed the garden path, and a plastic drop cloth had been spread over only half the stones. Several rose stems protruded beyond it, their leaves freckled gray.
