The HOA Manager Spilled Her Paint, Then Learned She Had Audited Contracts for Eleven Years

Chapter 1: White Paint Across Jennifer Lee’s Driveway

The paint bucket struck the driveway on its rim.

For one suspended second, it rocked between Gregory Carter’s polished shoe and the cracked concrete. Then it tipped, and a sheet of white paint rolled across the black surface toward Debra Wilson’s boots.

Nobody moved.

Gregory looked down at the spreading paint, then back at Debra as though she had caused it.

“That,” he said, pointing at the widening pool, “is exactly the kind of carelessness we’re dealing with.”

Debra’s right hand tightened around the handle of her roller tray. Her left stayed close to the inside pocket of her faded denim work jacket, where a folded work order pressed against her ribs.

Jennifer Lee stood three steps away near the garage, pale and silent. Beside Gregory were Anthony Harris, the HOA treasurer, and the association president. Two homeowners had stopped on the sidewalk. One held a leash so tightly that the small dog at the end of it stood motionless.

Gregory turned enough to include everyone.
