The Morning My Neighbor Padlocked My Gate, I Learned Why the Whole Association Wanted Me Silent

Chapter 1: The Padlock Was Hanging on My Gate at Dawn

The chain struck the gate twice before sunrise.

Metal against metal carried farther than a shout in the quiet, sharp enough to stop me halfway across the field. I had been walking toward my truck with a thermos in one hand and a ring of keys in the other. The truck was parked beyond the gate, near the abandoned workshop I had spent the previous week clearing.

When the chain hit again, I saw the man on the other side.

He wore sunglasses despite the low gray light. One hand rested on a new brass padlock threaded through my gate. Behind him, a motorhome sat sideways across the gravel lane, long enough that its rear wheels nearly touched one ditch while its front bumper crowded the other.

My truck was trapped behind it.

The man lifted his chin. “Morning.”

“Take that lock off.”

He glanced at the woman beside him. She already had her phone raised.
