He Crushed the Boundary Stake, but the Wall Had Already Changed Both Their Lives

Chapter 1: The Stake Broke Before Either Man Stepped Back

Benjamin’s boot came down before David finished saying, “Don’t touch that.”

The orange survey stake snapped near the ground. Its painted top struck the retaining wall, bounced once, and disappeared into the wet grass. The lower half stayed buried in the soil, split along the grain.

Benjamin kept his work boot planted over it.

“There,” he said. “Now show me where your line is.”

David stood with one hand still raised. Rainwater collected at the edge of his sleeve and ran over his wrist. For a moment, he watched Benjamin’s boot press deeper into the soft earth.

Ten years earlier, David might have answered quickly. Twenty years earlier, he would have matched the other man’s volume and regretted every word by lunch.

Instead, he took his phone from his pocket.

Benjamin laughed. “You taking pictures of dirt now?”
