My Neighbors Claimed My Side Yard Until the Survey Line Cut Through Their Koi Pond

Chapter 1: The Morning They Pulled Up Her Hostas

The first hosta came out of the ground with a sound like cloth tearing.

Patrick Harris heard it through the open kitchen window and set his coffee down without drinking. By the time he reached the side door, Nicole Walker had both hands around the plant’s root ball. Dark soil spilled across her pale gardening gloves. Three broad leaves bent beneath her wrist.

She laid the hosta beside a wheelbarrow already holding two others.

Patrick stopped on the concrete step.

“Nicole.”

She looked up, not startled enough.

“Oh. Morning.”

The strip between the houses was narrow enough that ordinary sounds carried clearly: a screen door closing, a rake against stone, the low mechanical hum of the Walkers’ koi-pond pump. A new white picket fence ran from their rear patio toward the street, then turned abruptly across the grass. Its final section sat between Patrick and the bed of hostas his wife had planted eleven years earlier.
