They Ordered Her Fence Moved, Then Learned Their Pool Was Built Across Her Property

Chapter 1: The Certified Letter Beside the Old White Fence

The certified envelope was caught halfway through the white fence gate, its cardboard edge bent where the latch had closed against it.

Virginia Miller saw it from the kitchen window just after seven in the evening, while a client’s unfinished tax return glowed on one monitor and a spreadsheet of quarterly payments filled the other. She had been working since before sunrise. A mug of coffee sat cold beside her keyboard, and the ache behind her eyes had settled into a steady pulse.

The envelope did not belong there.

Her mail was delivered to the box at the curb. Anything pushed through the gate had been brought by hand.

Virginia stepped outside without putting on shoes. The cedar boards of the porch were cool beneath her socks. Beyond the fence, the Riveras’ pool lights had already come on, turning the water an unnatural blue. Someone on their patio laughed, and glass touched glass.

The return address belonged to a law office she did not recognize.

Inside was a two-page demand advising her that the fence separating her property from Thomas and Ashley Rivera’s property stood approximately six feet beyond the lawful boundary. She was instructed to relocate it within thirty days and restore the affected area at her own expense.

Virginia read the sentence twice.
