The Woman Who Mocked the Blue Rock Hunt Ended Up Saving the Neighborhood

Chapter 1: The Note Taped to Catherine’s Mailbox

The note was taped crookedly across Catherine Miller’s mailbox door, blocking the brass handle as if whoever had placed it there wanted to make certain she could not collect her mail without touching it.

FIND THE HIDDEN BLUE ROCK. WIN A SURPRISE.

Beneath the words was a lopsided drawing of an oval stone painted blue.

Catherine stood at the curb with one hand on the mailbox post and read the message twice. The second reading did not improve it.

Across the street, a child in red sneakers ran from one hedge to another while his older sister called, “It could be anywhere!”

Their mother, Jennifer Adams, followed at a slower pace, laughing as she checked beneath a cluster of ornamental grasses. Two houses down, Andrew Clark had already put on a fluorescent safety vest, though the sun was barely above the roofs and there was no traffic except a delivery van turning at the entrance.

“Morning, Catherine,” Andrew called. “You joining us?”

Catherine peeled the tape from the mailbox. It left a tacky strip across the black paint.
