She Let the Farmer Finish Shouting Before Opening the Ledger That Could Cost Them Both the Land

Chapter 1: The Count That Changed Before Anyone Reached the Fence

Raymond Clark pointed at Nicole’s ledger before she finished counting.

“That book’s wrong.”

His voice carried across the enclosure, above the squeal of young pigs and the metallic rattle of bodies pressing against the low wire fence. One of the seasonal farmhands stopped dragging a feed hose. The other turned from the water line. Near the gate, Jonathan Lewis lowered his phone and looked from Raymond to Nicole.

The local reporter kept filming.

Nicole rested her thumb beneath the line she had reached. One hundred eighty-seven animals stood, shoved, rooted, or slept inside the main enclosure. She had counted twice from the raised loading step, separating breeding sows from feeder pigs by tag color.

“I’m not finished,” she said.

“You were finished before you got here.” Raymond stepped close enough that the brim of his work cap nearly touched her black hat. “County office tells you what ought to be standing here, and your eyes just arrange themselves around it.”

Nicole did not move. Behind Raymond, three pigs fought over a strip of burlap, snapping it back and forth until it tore.
