The Day Sarah Stopped Her Grandfather From Cutting Off the Water to Their Last Field

Chapter 1: The Hose Gary Tried to Take Away

Gary Carter jerked the green hose so hard it snapped against Sarah’s boot.

“Move your foot.”

Sarah pressed down harder.

The hose ran across the baked yard from the pump shed to the only strip of alfalfa that still held any green. Beyond it, the rest of the field had gone the color of old rope. Forty-three cows stood along the fence, their heads angled toward the pasture as if they could smell the water moving beneath the dirt.

Gary bent, caught the hose in both hands, and pulled again.

Sarah’s heel slid half an inch through the dust.

“I said move.”

“And I said they need that field.”
