The Fence Was Only Two Feet Wrong, but It Divided an Entire Neighborhood

Chapter 1: The New Fence Cut Through Living Soybeans

The cedar post struck the ground with a dull, splitting thud, crushing two soybean plants beneath its metal shoe.

Robert Carter heard it from the cab of his tractor.

He shut off the engine before the contractor could drive the post any deeper. The sudden quiet exposed every smaller sound—the ticking engine, the dry rasp of leaves against his tires, the hydraulic whine from the post driver idling beside the new hole.

The contractor looked over, one hand still on the controls.

“You need to stop,” Robert said.

The man glanced toward the Nelson house before answering. “I’ve got a marked line.”

Robert climbed down slowly. At sixty-two, he no longer jumped from the tractor step the way he once had, but there was nothing uncertain in the way he crossed the row. He stopped beside the post and looked down at the broken plants.

The line ran straight through the outer edge of his soybeans.
