The Morning the HOA Sent Chainsaws, Sarah Found the Missing Money Behind Her Hedges

Chapter 1: The Chainsaws Arrived Before Her Coffee Had Cooled

The chainsaw blade stopped inches beneath the first privet branch.

Sarah Walker stepped between it and the hedge before she had time to decide whether that was sensible. Hot coffee sloshed over the rim of her mug and struck her bare wrist, but she did not look down.

“Don’t start that saw.”

The man holding it lowered the bar without releasing the handle. Behind him, two other workers stood beside a chipper and a flatbed truck. Their engines idled along the curb, filling the quiet street with diesel vibration. It was 6:15 in the morning. Porch lights still glowed on two neighboring houses.

At the end of Sarah’s driveway, Margaret Clark watched from beside a white utility vehicle. She wore a tan blazer, pressed slacks, and the expression she used whenever she was about to explain that somebody else had left her no choice.

“The removal was properly noticed,” Margaret said. “Please don’t interfere with contracted work.”

Sarah looked again at the man with the saw.

She knew the scuffed work boots, the gray sweatshirt, and the narrow scar beside his left thumb. James Scott had sat across from her desk three weeks earlier while she explained why taking cash from a business account without recording the owner draw would create a mess at tax time.
