The HOA Called Her Flashing Doorbell Tacky Until Its Own Records Exposed the Real Danger

Chapter 1: The Notice Covered the Light Robert Built

The yellow notice covered half the flashing doorbell.

Ruth Mitchell saw it before she saw the two women on her porch. The paper had been taped across the trim so that one corner overlapped the clear plastic lens Robert had mounted beside the doorframe. Beneath it, the strobe pulsed once, white against yellow, then went dark.

Ruth stopped with a grocery bag in each hand.

Heather Davis stood three feet from the threshold in a navy blazer, one hand wrapped around a plastic cup of iced coffee. Sandra Hill waited behind her with a clipboard tucked against her ribs.

Ruth set the bags down inside the doorway.

“Mrs. Mitchell,” Heather said, shaping each word carefully but not naturally. People often exaggerated their mouths when they knew Ruth could not hear well. “We’ve posted a formal violation.”

Ruth looked at Heather’s lips, then at the notice.

The strobe flashed again.
