She Filed a Noise Complaint, Then Learned Why the Whole Building Had Been Listening Wrong

Chapter 1: The Note Appeared Before the Music Stopped

The violation notice appeared on Kevin Davis’s door while he was still playing.

Cynthia saw Patricia Allen cross the second-floor walkway with a tablet tucked beneath one arm and a white envelope in her hand. Patricia pressed the adhesive strip against Kevin’s blue door, smoothed it twice, then stepped back as if the matter had already been settled.

Across the courtyard, the trumpet continued.

The first notes came cleanly through Cynthia’s open balcony door. Then the sound found the bedroom wall and sharpened. The baby monitor on the kitchen counter showed a green line trembling into yellow.

Cynthia froze with one hand around a half-rinsed bottle.

“No,” she whispered.

A red wake alert flashed.

From the bedroom came the first thin cry, followed by the breathless pause that meant the crying would soon become harder to stop.
