The HOA Locked His Private Road, but Removing the Gate Cost More Than Anyone Expected

Chapter 1: The Gate Across the Road He Owned

Donald Harris’s key entered the black padlock cleanly, but it would not turn.

He tried once more, slower this time, feeling for the worn catch he knew from thirty years of locks, toolboxes, fuel caps, and municipal equipment sheds. The key stopped against something solid. It was the wrong lock.

Donald looked through the bars of the new steel gate at the gravel road beyond it.

His road.

The gate stood twelve feet across, taller than his pickup, its square posts sunk into fresh concrete on either side. Dew still clung to the black paint. Whoever had installed it had finished recently enough that the gravel around the footings remained darker than the rest of the lane.

He stepped back and read the laminated notice fastened at eye level.

SECURITY ACCESS REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Below that were instructions to contact the Meadow Ridge Homeowners Association office for entry credentials.
