After His Dog Broke Through Our Fence, the Survey Exposed What Both Neighbors Had Hidden

Chapter 1: The Dog Was Already Inside the Garden

Emily’s scream came through the kitchen glass before Michael saw what had caused it.

He dropped the dish towel and reached the patio door in three strides. Outside, Jeffrey Wilson’s brown dog stood between Emily and the house, its paws planted in the overturned soil of her sunflower bed. Behind it, three fence boards leaned inward around a jagged opening.

Emily was pressed against the raised planter. Mud streaked the front of her yellow shirt. One knee was scraped, and both hands were lifted beside her face as if she had forgotten what to do with them.

“Don’t run,” Michael said through the glass.

She looked at him, but the dog turned at the sound of his voice.

Michael opened the door just wide enough to step through and pulled it shut behind him. The dog was not growling. Its tail moved in a low, uncertain sweep, but Michael could see the muscles in Emily’s legs trembling.

“Back,” he said.

The dog took one step toward him.
