She Counted Every Tow Until the Morning They Tried Taking Her Daughter Too

Chapter 1: The Hook Struck Before Samantha Could Reach the Door

The tow cable snapped tight while Amy’s face was still visible through the rear window.

Samantha heard the metallic crack from inside the house. She had been halfway across the kitchen, one shoe on, her hospital badge clenched between her teeth, when the sound cut through the hum of the refrigerator.

She ran outside without the second shoe.

The silver minivan jerked backward six inches. Amy sat buckled into her booster seat, one hand pressed against the glass, her mouth open in confusion.

“Stop!” Samantha shouted.

The tow operator glanced over his shoulder but did not release the controls. He wore an orange safety vest over a black T-shirt, and his broad forearm rested casually against the truck’s control panel.

“My daughter is inside.”

He looked through the minivan window, then back at Samantha.
