They Laughed When Kimberly Buried the Orchard in Apples, Until She Opened Her Father’s Last Ledger

Chapter 1: The Morning the Apples Covered the Yard

The first apples struck the gravel before Kimberly reached the release handle.

Three bright red Galas rolled beneath the loading tractor, followed by a thin stream of fruit squeezing through the warped seam at the bottom of the storage wall. Inside the barn, timber groaned under forty tons of harvest.

“Everybody out,” Kimberly shouted.

The conveyor kept rattling. Two seasonal pickers stared at her from the sorting platform, uncertain whether she meant them.

“Now. Leave the bins.”

She ran past the open bay, boots sliding on crushed fruit. Jack Green was already waving the crew toward the side door, but one worker had climbed onto the lower catwalk to free a jammed belt.

A sharp crack sounded above them.

Dust sifted from the rafters.
